Green energy in Europe

Electricity markets are being liberalized all over the world. National governments are thinking of ways to make sure that renewable energy, often more expensive to produce than electricity from fossil fuels, gets a fair chance on the market.

One way of achieving this is by promoting the trade in green energy, by adopting clear definitions, certifying electricity from renewable sources and facilitating the trade. Of course this should be combined with stimulating demand and development on the supply side.

Parties involved in the green energy market in Europe have formed a platform 'Renewable Energy Certificates System' (RECS) to enable international trade. This should make it possible to realise projects at the most suitable places, providing renewable energy at the lowest possible cost.

Once such a system has been adopted by all European countries, energy users will have the possibility to choose their own green energy suppliers and products within participating countries, whereas there is the possibility to check whether the energy is really produced from renewable energy sources.
