EU launches sustainable energy campaign
The European Commission launched in July a campaign to raise the awareness of the public on the importance and advantages of sustainable energy.

The core message of the ‘Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign 2005 –2008’ is: “Intelligent energy production and consumption will change the European energy landscape forever”.

The campaign is focusing on decision-makers at local, regional, national and European levels and is aiming at a strong level of public awareness, understanding and support on sustainable energy. With this campaign, the European Commission also wants to stimulate the increase in private investments in sustainable energy technologies. The campaign is part of the ‘Intelligent Energy for Europe programme’, which also focuses at promotion of sustainable energy.

Institutions, companies or organizations, both public and private, implementing or planning to implement sustainable energy actions or programmes can contribute to the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign by becoming a ‘Sustainable Energy Partner’. These partnerships are the main instruments of the campaign specially designed to actively involve and promote a wide range of energy projects or programmes that intend to have a significant impact upon the related energy environment in the European Union. Find more information about becoming a partner, see http://www.sustenergy.org/.

Achievable benchmarks are also provided within the campaign, in order to measure the progress of sustainable energy actions and serve as goals for decision-makers and planners. In the area of renewable energy sources, these benchmarks are in line with the EU’s 2010 targets and estimates.

In general the campaign could contribute to the EU’s commitment of increasing the share of renewable energy sources in our consumption to 12% by 2010 and the EU’s objective of harnessing cost-effective energy savings for Europe equivalent to 20% of the EU's current energy use.
