IPCC prepares Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources

IPCC prepares Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) agreed to hold a scoping meeting in late 2007 to prepare a Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources. The German Government presented the proposal for the Special Report and will host the scoping meeting. The proposal is supported by Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Gambia, Greece, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Germany noted that renewable energy sources need more attention. Together with energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and technologies represent a major mitigation option that remains to be addressed in depth. There is a need to compare different options for mitigation in greater detail than is possible in an IPCC Assessment Report. Most countries supported the proposal, with many emphasising the value and urgency of such a review for developing countries.

Saudi Arabia, China and the US did not support the proposal and said it was premature given limited human and financial resources. The US said it was not in a position to provide funding for this and could not guarantee participation on the scoping meeting. Germany will try to provide funding for the meeting.
