Germany launches CO2-free lignite power plant on oxyfuels

Three weeks ago Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel officially launched the construction of a first of its kind CO2-free lignite power plant. Vattenfall is investing 50 million euros to build the 30 MW pilot plant scheduled to be operational in 2008.

The new power plant is located near the existing lignite fired 1600 MW power plant in Schwarze Pumpe and it will be based on the so-called oxyfuel technology. The objective of the pilot plant is to validate and improve the oxyfuel technology, which is one of the three main methods for capturing carbon dioxide. According to Vattenfall it is currently the most promising method with regard to costs for capturing carbon dioxide at power plants.

In the pilot plant pure oxygen and recycled CO2 will be used to combust lignite. The carbon dioxide emissions will be captured and liquidised, to be transported and permanently stored underground. Vattenfall is currently searching for a suitable storage site to be connected to the pilot plant.
