The prospectus for the new institute explains that the main reason to create the institute is the urgent need in the UK to accelerate the development of secure, reliable and cost-effective low-carbon energy technologies towards commercial deployment. The Energy Research Partnership has announced that they will also invest in the institute. The DTI itself will provide £ 500 million.
The objectives of the institute are closely linked to the UK’s overall energy policy objectives:
- To increase the level of funding devoted to R&D to meet the UK’s energy policy goals.
- To deliver R&D that facilitates the rapid commercial deployment of cost effective, low carbon energy technologies.
- To provide better strategic focus for commercially applicable energy related R&D in the UK.
- To connect and manage networks of the best scientists and engineers to deliver focused energy R&D.
- To build R&D capacity in the UK in the relevant disciplines to deliver the UK's energy policy goals.
On 11 October 2006 there will be an open information event with the aim to attract investors and people who want to collaborate in the work for the institute.
