In the next 5 to 7 years half of the 23,000 buildings in Carmbridge will receive an energy audit. This applies to university, commercial and residential buildings alike. The consultants will focus on small and effective energy saving measures such as replacing light bulbs with more energy efficient compact fluorescent light, installing roof insulation and providing more efficient heating and cooling systems.
The energy efficiency measures will be financed by loans from a $ 70 million fund. Large capital improvement costs may be shared by the programme and the building owners themselves.
The goal is to reduce electricity use by 10 to 14%. According to energy specialists involved in setting up the programme, the total annual emissions will be reduced by 150,000 tonnes of CO2.
