Back to 'Our common Future'
24 April 2007- This morning Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende looked back at ‘Our Common Future’, the book that was published exactly twenty years ago by the UN World Commission on Economy and Development. The commission, chaired by Norwegian former prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, practically invented the term ‘sustainable development’.

The Dutch Prime Minister spoke at a large Dutch event concerning sustainable technologies. Balkenende referred to the Brundtland report describing the present situation: “Sustainability is now a living issue, but difficult to put in practice,” adding that it’s not hype, but it’s a structural issue that will still be in place even also if oil prices decrease again. In a few weeks time, the new Dutch government, in place for two months now, will present its plans for sustainable energy and other environmental issues. “I still believe sustainable development will hurt, in your wallet, your planning or your organisation. But the Dutch government will help to ease the pain”, the Dutch government leader said.

Without mentioning any details of the Dutch plans, Balkenende promised to improve policies, to create sustainable conditions for companies and citizens and to have 100% sustainable public procurement in 2010.
