Norway commits to become carbon neutral by 2050

23 April 2007 - Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg wants Norway to be the first country ever to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero. Last Thursday, Stoltenberg presented this carbon neutral goal (to be reached by 2050), together with two further targets: Norway would exceed its Kyoto Protocol target by 10% and would cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020.

“Norway will be at the forefront of international climate efforts. Norway will take a leading role in the development of a new, binding climate agreement”, said Stoltenberg in his speech to the congress of the Labour Party. “Rich countries should become carbon neutral. This does not mean no emissions from the countries in question. But it does mean that each tonne of greenhouse gases emitted is to be offset by an equivalent reduction elsewhere. This adds up to zero emissions.”

The Prime Minister said the Norwegian Government agreed last Thursday to the proposal of a 30% cut in emissions by 2020, and it has indicated its firm support for the Kyoto and carbon neutrality goals. The intention is to reach the goals by implementing extensive measures at home and abroad.
