Agenda

BBC World documentary on feed-in tariffs
2 May 2007 – Next weekend, BBC World will feature a documentary on the advantages of feed-in tariffs to support renewable electricity. The documentary “Pay-Back Time” compares the situation in countries that have implemented a feed-in tariff system as a support scheme for renewable electricity technologies such as wind turbines and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (for example, Germany) with the situation in the UK that uses a quota system to support renewable electricity.

A feed-in tariff system is a way to support renewable electricity which obliges a fixed price to be paid to renewable electricity generators for each unit of renewable electricity they generate, usually over a fixed period. These legal guarantees ensure investment security, and support for all qualifying renewable energy technologies. The feed-in tariff system was recommended by the Stern Report as the best policy tool to achieve the fastest, lowest-cost deployment of renewables.

“Pay-Back time” has been produced by TVE, for its Earth Report series, with funding from the World Future Council and the European Union. The documentary will be broadcast on the BBC World channel on Saturday 5 May at 10.30h and Sunday 6 May at 03.30h, 14.30h, and 21.30h (times quoted are for the UK timezone, which is currently GMT +1 hour).
