Agenda

Biodiesel plant in Rotterdam

7 May 2007 - A biodiesel plant will be built in the Port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands), one of Northern Europe's key oil refining areas. The plant will be a multi-feedstock plant with the capacity to convert up to 400,000 tonnes of vegetable oil per year to biodiesel for major oil companies.

Construction of the plant, which is subject to environmental permitting, is expected to start later this year with the plant commencing full scale commercial production in 2009. The biodiesel plant is being developed by the British firm WHEB Biofuels. Investment in the new plant amounts to 48 million Euros.

Colin Horton, Managing Director of WHEB Biofuels said: “The Rotterdam plant will provide a much needed resource to support the increasing demand for biofuels and thus make an important contribution to the EU’s biofuels and greenhouse gas reduction targets.”

The biodiesel plant will be built at a location with good rail, road and sea access to the major global oil and vegetable oil markets. The plant will be able to feed on a mix of vegetable oil feedstocks for biodiesel production, thus expectedly reduce feedstock costs.
