Agenda

Largest heat pump system for Edinburgh
30 March 2007 - One of the largest ground source heating systems in the UK has been given the go-ahead in the first phase of the 411 million Euros Caltongate development in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Under the plans, the £2 million renewable heating system will provide heat and cooling for 60% of the Caltongate development. The ground source heating system is expected to reduce carbon emissions from the site by around a third.

The masterplan for the regeneration of the Caltongate area has been given approval by Edinburgh councillors. The development will include 200 new homes, offices, bars and restaurants and a new public square on the 3.4 hectare site.

The Caltongate scheme caused controversy last week after city environment leader Bob Cairns claimed that developer Mountgrange was trying to “bolt the door” by submitting plans in a “piecemeal approach”. Manish Chande, Chief Executive of Mountgrange, said, “We look forward to delivering the ground source heating.”
