Wanted in every boardroom: Chief Energy Officer
11 May 2007 - A new member of the boards, called the Chief Energy Officer (CNO) could solve the paradox that companies acknowledge the energy and climate problem and want to do something about it, but don’t have a strategy on this issue.

This is one of the headlines of a poll executed by communication consultant Hill & Knowlton among more than 400 senior business decision makers in the US, the UK, China and Canada. At this moment, more than two thirds of all the companies polled don’t have one person within their organisation who is responsible for energy strategy. Most of the companies have no strategy in this field, while most respondents are following the issue as a business reality.

Presently, the decision makers believe in most cases (75%) the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for energy, whereas the CEO delegates matters like finance, IT and marketing to other officials at the ‘C-suite’. 77% of all respondents believe a CNO is required. When asked how companies should measure their ‘return on environment’, 52% responded that ‘improved corporate reputation’ was the most important parameter.
