The Financial Times in the UK reports that the US is still rejecting Merkel’s call for reduction targets for carbon emissions. Merkel told the German parliament “we must significantly and quickly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to limit the earth warming”. The G8 should “develop a common understanding how climate change can be tackled. I don’t know if we will succeed in that at Heiligendamm.” Merkel thinks a common understanding is essential for a constructive post-Kyoto agreement (for beyond 2012).
