The U.S. Air Force leads
the top 25, purchasing more than 321 million kWh annually, 4% of
their total power consumption for Air Force bases across the country.
Second on the list, Johnson & Johnson bought more than 241 million
kWh of renewable energy in 2004, 24% of their total power consumption.
EPA and the World Bank rank third and fourth on the list.
Together, the top 25 partners
are purchasing more than 1.6 terawatthour (TWh) of green power annually,
which is approximately 68 percent of the green power commitments
made by all Partners of the EPA's Green Power Partnership.
The Green Power Partnership
is an EPA voluntary program working to standardize green power procurement
as part of best practice environmental management. Partners in the
program pledge to switch to green power for a portion of their electricity
needs in return for EPA technical assistance and recognition. The
Green Power Partnership currently includes more than 550 partners,
including companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations
and universities.
Green power currently accounts
for about two percent of America's electricity supply, but voluntary
purchasing of renewable energy is accelerating renewable energy
development.
