Norwegian retreat stalls renewable projectsLast week the Norwegian government announced that talks with Sweden about one integrated market for green certificates have turned out to be fruitless. The announced participation of Norway in the Swedish Elcert market, seen as an important first example of harmonization of support schemes in Europe, will not be established. (Subscription required) Amsterdam Forum: efficiency and biofuelsThe annual Amsterdam Forum, organized by the Netherlands on behalf of the European Commission, will focus on two topics. On April 24 th the Action Plan for energy efficiency will be discussed, the next day the situation concerning biofuels will be the topic. (Subscription required) Many CDM projects deal with renewablesLast year saw a large contracted volume of greenhouse gas reductions in developing countries financed by developed countries. About 2700 projects were contracted in 2005. A considerable number of these projects (42%) concern renewable energy, according to the annual carbon market overview by Point Carbon. (Subscription required) Europe needs Directive to promote renewable heating and coolingWith large majority the European Parliament adopted the EREC initiative report on renewable heating and cooling. This report concludes that Europe needs a Directive before the end of 2006, to develop stronger policies for the promotion of heating and cooling from renewables. Governments need to invest more in renewable energy technologiesThe International Energy Agency (IEA) recommends governments to invest more in research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of renewable energy technologies, especially into solar and tidal power.
