Germany steps towards a sustainable energy supply

Energy efficiency Directive adopted

Last week the EU Energy Council of Ministers adopted the Directive on Energy End-use Efficiency and Energy Services. Member States have thereby set themselves the objective of reducing their energy consumption by 1% per annum over a period of nine years.

World's largest CO2 capture pilot plant inaugurated in Denmark

The largest pilot plant in the world for demonstrating and validating new technology for the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from conventional power stations was inaugurated in Denmark last week. The pilot at the Elsham power station near Esbjerg is the result of the CASTOR project, funded from the Sixth Framework Programme for Research of the European Union.

Spain and the USA remain the most attractive countries in the world for renewable energies, according to the latest analysis from Ernst & Young published in the 'Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices'. The report notes that both Spain and the USA 'continue to offer strong growth and attract the bulk of capital investment'.

High Level Group on competitiveness, energy and environment

In the kick-off meeting the High Level Group (HLG) on competitiveness, energy and environment reached agreement on the working methods and the subjects to be prepared for the next meeting. The HLG was set up by the European Commission in October 2005. JREC declaration: further action needed on renewable energy

In a joint declaration on renewable energy, the ministers of the Johannesburg Renewable Energy Coalition (JREC) repeated the importance of further actions on renewable energy to be taken by the global community. JREC adopted this statement during the last meeting in Dubai in February. More specifically, the JREC ministers urge the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD) of the UN to establish an efficient arrangement to review and assess progress towards the global increase of renewable energies.

First step towards a Nordic integrated market cancelled

Last month the long-awaited integration of the Norwegian and Swedish markets for green energy was cancelled. The integration into one certificate market would have been a nice example for the entire EU, because it was expected to show that renewable energy sources would have been used more effectively. Now integration of the two markets seems beyond the horizon, and that indeed will be a drawback on international trade. Read moreimage
