EU sets 2020 targets for emissions reduction and sustainable energy

At least a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 compared to 1990 and an effort to push towards a 30% emissions reduction in 2020 in negotiations with other developed countries, largely to be achieved by a 20% share of renewable energy and 20% extra energy efficiency. Read moreimage

Sectoral targets for renewable energy on national level

A Directive covering all three relevant sectors of energy demand (electricity, transport fuels, and heating and cooling) will be the key piece of legislation in the Renewable Energy Roadmap 2010-2020. Renewables: 2010 targets will be missed

According to the latest estimates, the EU will not meet its targets for power from renewables sources (21% in 2010) or the general target of a share of 12% renewables in total energy demand by 2010. Most probably the 25 Members States will reach a 19% share in power and at the most a 10% share in overall energy. Read moreimage

Binding target for biofuels of 10% in 2020

The minimum standard for the share of biofuels has to be 10 % in 2020. This the most outstanding element of the Biofuels Progress Report in which the Commission proposes to revise the Biofuels Directive of 2003. The Commission concludes that the promotion of biofuels is the only way to significantly reduce dependence on oil in transport and move towards a low carbon economy.

Promotion of sustainable fossil fuel technologies and CCS

The European Commission is convinced that much cleaner coal technologies and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions are necessary to achieve the long term climate change objectives of the EU. The Commission will increase the funding for R&D in the energy area, making the demonstration of more sustainable fossil fuel technologies one of the priorities for 2007 – 2013.

Office of the Energy Observatory

The Commission wants to establish an Office of the Energy Observatory within the Directorate General for Energy and Transport to monitor the progress of the policies of the Energy Package regarding security of supply, competitive energy pricing and sustainability.
