Strong opposition to mandatory targets for renewables

Yesterday, during a first working group meeting, the European Council showed strong opposition to some elements in the Road Map for Renewables to the year 2020, which the Commission presented on the 10th of January. New Danish energy plan: doubling of renewables

The Danish government has launched the country’s energy plan ‘A visionary Danish energy policy’ that describes the goals for Danish energy policy to 2025. German renewable energy sector shows impressive growth

In Germany, the renewable energy sector showed impressive growth on all fronts in 2006, reinforcing Germany’s position as the European leader in terms of renewables. And Germany goes further on; the environment ministry announced to almost double investments in renewable energy in 2007, to € 83 million, and environmental minister Sigmar Gabriel announced plans for a draft law to promote and oblige the use of renewable heating. Editorial: binding or indicative targets?

Three times he mentioned the word ‘energy’, one time ‘climate change’ and one time ‘renewable’.  The European renewable industry should be glad that President Bush’s State of the Union speech was still far from being ‘sustainable’. Although a reduction target for fossil transport fuels hits the heart of the American economy, there was no mention of energy efficiency measures or implementing renewables at large scales.
