Environment Council backs 20% emissions reduction by 2020

The Environment Council supports most of the measures proposed by the European Commission to tackle climate change. In its conclusions of 20 February, the Environment Council gave a green light to the proposed reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 20% by 2020 compared to the 1990 level, the inclusion of aviation in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and the reduction of emissions from cars to 130 grammes per kilometre. Emissions trading will put airlines under pressure

The Environment Council approves the European Commission proposal to include emissions from air travel in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. Launched last December by Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, the proposal seeks to cap airline greenhouse gas emissions at the 2005 level, despite projected growth. Hungary to sell second batch of carbon allowances
