As reported by NREL, “In
2004, sales of renewable energy through utility green power programs
continued to exhibit strong growth, reaching 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours
(kWh). Utility green pricing programs are one segment of a larger
green power marketing industry that counts more than one-half million
customers nationwide and helps support more than 1,600 MW of renewable
electricity generation capacity.”
Participation in utility green power programs continues to grow
across the USA with a number of states and utilities leading the
way. According to NREL, the top three utilities in terms of gross
kWh sold were:
1. Austin Energy (334,446,101 kWh/year)
2. Portland General Electric (262,142,564 kWh/year)
3. PacifiCorp (191,838,079 kWh/year)
In terms of overall customer participation rates, two utilities
could boast 10% of their customer base as being “green
power” customers:
1. Lenox Municipal Utilities (14.5%)
2. City of Palo Alto Utilities (10.9%)
It should also be noted that both of these utilities only began
offering an option to purchase green power in 2003.
Premiums for green electricity range from about 0.33¢/kWh
to 17.6¢/kWh with a median of 2.5¢/kWh.
