Utilities in the USA report driving sales of green electricity
Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released its annual ranking of leading utility green power programs. Voluntary in nature, approximately 600 utilities across 34 states offer customers the choice of purchasing a portion of their power from renewable energy resources.

As reported by NREL, “In 2004, sales of renewable energy through utility green power programs continued to exhibit strong growth, reaching 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh). Utility green pricing programs are one segment of a larger green power marketing industry that counts more than one-half million customers nationwide and helps support more than 1,600 MW of renewable electricity generation capacity.”

Participation in utility green power programs continues to grow across the USA with a number of states and utilities leading the way. According to NREL, the top three utilities in terms of gross kWh sold were:
1. Austin Energy (334,446,101 kWh/year)
2. Portland General Electric (262,142,564 kWh/year)
3. PacifiCorp (191,838,079 kWh/year)

In terms of overall customer participation rates, two utilities could boast 10% of their customer base as being “green power” customers:
1. Lenox Municipal Utilities (14.5%)
2. City of Palo Alto Utilities (10.9%)

It should also be noted that both of these utilities only began offering an option to purchase green power in 2003.

Premiums for green electricity range from about 0.33¢/kWh to 17.6¢/kWh with a median of 2.5¢/kWh.
