One proposal will concern climate policies, another proposal will be one Directive on renewable energy, including biofuels. The Commission is also considering designing one integrated impact assessment for both documents. German government decides to reduce 40% emissions by 2020Last week the German cabinet of Ministers has approved of a proposal by the German environmental Ministry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with 40% by the year 2020. “All economical and social sectors will contribute”, environment minister Siegmar Gabriel promises.Call for climate action at UN General Assembly
In early August the UN General Assembly held an informal debate on ‘Climate change as a global challenge’ in New York. It was one of the steps leading up to the Climate Summit in Bali next December. The NY meeting left no doubt about the need for global action. Germany's most important climate measures “We have enough options and tools – but we must also apply them with determination and we must do so quickly” says the new study “Climate protection in Germany: 40% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2020 compared to 1990” published recently by the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt). Forests beat biofuelsIf you really want to reduce CO2 emissions from transport, forget about biofuels, English researchers write in Science.
