The Dutch Market
In 1995 PNEM started an experiment selling green energy. This experiment proved to be a success. Nowadays quite a few suppliers offer renewable energy.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) started in co-operation with the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs a national promotion campaign in The Netherlands, to stimulate renewable energy. At September 4th 1999 the WNF started a campaign 'Don't let the Northpole melt away… go for green energy!' Because of this campaign, 44.000 Dutch energy customers applied for green energy. Between September 1999 and January 2000 the total amount of green customers increased with therefore 38%.
Customers switch over to green energy because it is friendliness to the environment . Because green energy is not more expensive as grey anymore, customers are even more and more motivated to switch over. The freedom of choice in energy, source and country of origin is increasing. That's what makes the green energy market so attractive.
From May 2001 the amount of green energy customers has grown quickly. This expansion started around July 1st 2001, about simultaneously with the liberalisation of the green energy market, at that time already 540,000 customers had chosen for green energy. At the end of 2001 the Netherlands had 775.000 green energy customers, which corresponds to an annual green electricity use of about 2.717 million kWh.
At July 1st 2002 GreenPrices counted 1,000,000 green energy customers. It is clear we can speak about a tremendous growth. Over 13% of the Dutch households use renewable energy. In Germany and the United Kingdom this percentage is less then 1% of the households. The amount of customers in The Netherlands is still growing fast. Soon there will be 1 million of Dutch households using green energy.
GreenPrices also spots a clear growth of suppliers. A lot of new suppliers enter the market. In the suppliers overview you will find the most actual information about products, energy sources, origin, the suppliers and their current prices.
