What is green energy?
Green energy is renewable energy that private persons and companies buy from their energy supplier. Energy is renewable if it is generated with environmental friendly and renewable energy sources. Renewable energy is generated from natural sources like wind, sun, biomass (trees and straw) and hydropower.

Stimulating green energy
Those who want to use renewable energy can decide to put a solar system on their roof and use the energy of the sun. Environmental friendly new estates are realised, where people make use of renewable energy. However not everyone has the chance to do this. And it is often advantageous to produce renewable energy on a large scale or at the most optimal places. Therefore, energy companies started offering an alternative for energy generated with coal, gas, oil and nuclear power: green energy. Every household is able to use green energy at home. And it is even possible to make a choice for a specific source of energy, like 100% biomass or wind and energy which is made in Holland.
The Dutch government stimulates the green energy market. Companies and governments in the Netherlands made common agreements about energy consumption (meerjarenafspraken).

The increase of green energy in The Netherlands
The interest in green energy is clear. In 2001 ca. 3.121 million kWh green energy has been used on a yearly basis. The market is developing fast. In May 2003 GreenPrices counted 1,8 million green energy customers in the Netherlands. It is clearly visible that the Dutch people have a large interest in clean energy. The building of renewable energy projects is growing too. Windturbines and biomass plants are built and at this moment people are developing plans for off shore windturbine projects, in the North Sea.
