Certifiers

The actual performance of the power plant and quality of energy offered can be verified by certifying (accreditation) organisations. Moreover, some certifiers verify whether the amount of specified energy generated equals the specified amount consumed by the users.

In Sweden there are at the moment three different types of certified electricity to buy: electricity labelled by the Good Environmental Choice (Bra Miljöval) program of the Swedish Association for Nature Conservation (SNF), the Certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) developed by the Swedish environmental management council (SEMC), and Production specified electricity (PS).

In case of Good Environmental Choice label a third party, the SNF, decides whether the production meets their criteria on sustainable energy production. With the other two certificates, EPD and PS, it is up to the consumer to decide whether it considers the electricity offered sustainable. The certificates are neutral and only confirm the origin of the electricity produced.
In case of EPD this is done by an independent institute, in case of PS the supplier itself guarantees that the corresponding amount electricity is produced in the specified way (for example hydro power, wind power, but also nuclear power).
