Most suppliers charge an additional amount per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The Dutch government does not impose energy tax on green energy. That way, the customer eventually pays less than the true additional costs.

The money paid by consumers of green energy is used for new sustainable energy projects. The production of electricity from renewable energy sources is generally still more expensive than electricity from gas or coal.

| Do I need a special connection for green energy? |
No, the electricity from your wall plug remains the same. Strictly spoken the origin of this electricity can't even be detected, but the energy company guarantees that the 'green' electricity you buy has been produced from renewable energy sources.

In most cases an independent organisation verifies whether the amount of electricity sold as green energy really comes from renewable energy sources.
